It’s Getting Real
Things are “getting real” for edUi 2017! First Sara Wachter-Boettcher, author of Design for Real Life, joined the edUi lineup. Now we’re pleased/thrilled/ecstatic to announce that Cory Doctorow, activist, co-editor of Boing Boing, and author of the graphic novel In Real Life will be joining us too!
A digital-rights activist and prolific writer of both nonfiction and science-fiction, Cory’s 2003 novel, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, was the first novel released under the Creative Commons licence, allowing readers to circulate the electronic edition at no cost. The novel was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 2004.
Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist, journalist and blogger — the co-editor of Boing Boing and the author of Walkaway, a novel for adults, a YA graphic novel called In Real Life, the nonfiction business book Information Doesn’t Want to Be Free, and young adult novels like Homeland, Pirate Cinema, and Little Brother and novels for adults like Rapture of the Nerds and Makers. He works for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, is a MIT Media Lab Research Affiliate, is a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Open University and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group. Born in Toronto, Canada, he now lives in Los Angeles.
Dark Patterns and Bad Business Models: “I Can’t Let You Do That, Dave.”
There are lots of ways to think about computers: as communications devices, as data-storage systems, as computational engines. The underlying technical reality is that they’re all of the above. It’s fine to treat a computer as an appliance as a matter of convenience. But we cross a line when our design goes just a little further, and threatens the restrictions imposed by giant multinationals. This design pattern treats the owners of computers as adversaries of their devices. This Bad Idea makes a small group of people very rich, and harms the rest of us — and the first in line to get bitten in the ass are schools, archives, libraries and public institutions.
